If you are a doctor, and you need to keep up with the latest development, or if you are an EMT or a pharmacist, you need continuing education units to maintain you license. Do you want to brush up on bioterrorism threats, or learn more about blast wounds? Or maybe you have had a lot of patients who want to quit smoking and you want to be able to help them. There are online continuing medical education courses to cover these topics and more.
Some medical education sites are owned by state medical associations, others by universities, and others are privately owned:
- Many University hospitals are a good resource. University of Utah offers many EMT courses for less than $100. This site also lists EMT CEU requirements by state so you can know if the courses you are taking cover your state requirements.
- Some state medical associations also offer continuing medical association courses.
- There are also private vendors like Thomson, who offer CME credits.
- Before you sign up for CME classes, make sure that you double check that the course counts toward re-licensure in your area. Some EMT courses may not count towards Pharmacist re-licensure or re-licensure for doctors.
- Also you should check with your state licensing agency before you start the classes to make sure that the entity that offers them is certified.
If you are looking for a good beginning site to find resources for medical continuing education, you will probably want to try cmelist.com.
