Nurse practitioners are nurses who are certified to diagnose illness and to prescribe medication. In order to keep their practicing license, these practitioners take nurse practitioner continuing education classes and recertification exams. Just like doctors, these nurses need to keep up-to-date on medical advances. The Internet has made this easier than ever. If we are going to trust our health to a doctor or nurse, we want to know that this doctor or nurse is still learning and knowledgeable about the latest medical advances and procedures.
There are scores of sites for nurse practitioners to catch up on the latest research and methods. There are even sites who claim to offer free nursing continuing education classes for nurses online. Some of these continuing education sites include streaming video and/or recorded lectures; others are lectures in print format. Other sites are sources for review books, CD's and videos to help nurses recertify. Whichever site you choose, you will want to check the accreditation. You don't want to pay money to a site that doesn't help you to re-certify as a nurse practitioner. Even if the site is free, you don't want to waste your valuable time on continuing education that isn't reliable.
Nurses need to consider the kinds of classes they take. Classes from colleges that are theoretical in nature or that don't deal with the category of care that the nurse is certified in, may not count towards re-certification.
