Do you want to go to school with out actually going to school? Do you want to earn college credit online? There are three kinds of colleges with online courses. The first kind is a college that is completely online, like University of Phoenix Online , or Western Governor's University. The second is a traditional college that offers online degrees, but most of the degrees require some attendance at the campus. Baker College is an example of one of these schools. The third kind of college offers online courses but no online degrees. Almost all colleges offer some type of courses online.
Here are a couple of example colleges in the first group:
- Western Governor's University is not the most well known, but I like it because they have an innovative approach to helping you earn your online degrees. As soon as you can show that you have mastered the material, you earn credit. Of course, the showing part will not be easy. You will need to complete difficult projects or tests. But the good thing is that you can possibly complete the degree sooner, and you can work with a mentor to design your own online college degree program.
- University of Phoenix is well-established online and offers one of the largest number of degree programs, both Bachelor's and Master's.
In the second group you can find many colleges:
- Baker College
- Villanova University
- And many others. Contact a college near you.
What is online learning like? When I was living in Taiwan and teaching English I wanted to earn some college credit, but there was no way I could understand what was going on in the colleges in Taiwan, and commuting to the U.S. was not an option. So I enrolled in an online college. My experience at the online college was a very positive one. I enjoyed the online discussions, in a newsgroup setting. Unlike speaking, when you write you have the chance to look over what you've written before you send it. So, sometimes the discussions in online classes are actually better than in a traditional classroom. I turned in PowerPoint presentations and Word documents online. The Professor was a little scant in his responses, but I enjoyed working with my group members on projects. I was able to be more assertive in an online environment than I was in a regular classroom environment.
Overall, I recommend college online courses for those who think they would enjoy the convenience. Online learning is not for everyone, but for some people it could be just what they need to get started on that degree.
