If you are looking to get a PhD and you don‘t want to relocate or quit your job, if you are self-motivated, and if you enjoy online communication, then you may want to consider earning your degree through one of the many on line doctorate programs. Online PhD programs are springing up in colleges around the country and around the world.
Online classes can be a great experience. I loved my experience in an online class at University of Phoenix . I didn't get a lot of interaction with the professor, but the online discussions were well thought out and stimulating. I wasn't sure how well groups would cooperate, communicating by computer, but I found that I was able to express myself more clearly and assertively by writing to my group members than I was in a real life setting.
Residency. Some PhD degree online programs, but not all, require a residency. For a residency you will need to spend from several days to a month at the University campus with other candidates for the on line doctorate. The residency requirements for online PhD programs vary from school to school. Some meet in the summer, others meet twice a year for a week or two. Usually students will meet with professors, read or present papers and projects, attend mandatory seminars, and spend some time getting to know one another. Some online PhD programs don't require a residency and you can earn your doctoral degree online completely.
Time. The time to complete an online doctorate depends a lot on your school and on the amount of time that you have to spend on the online PhD program. If you work on school on a full-time basis (usually spending 25 hours a week or more on school) then you will probably be able to finish your online doctorate program in 1½ - 3 years if you already have a Master's degree. If you don't already have a Master's then it will probably take longer.
Cost. The cost of earning your online doctorate varies a lot from school to school. You can usually expect to pay between $400 and $600 per credit hour to earn your PhD degree online.
