Do you want a Master's degree, but you don't have a school near you that offers the program that you need? Do you work shifts that keep you from attending graduate school? Or do you just not want to commute to get your education? You may want to consider one of the many online graduate schools.

What is the cost? The cost of online grad schools is often more than the cost for attending regular classes at a traditional graduate school. But it may even be less! You can expect to pay from as low as $160 to over $1000 per credit hour for your online graduate program.

How long will it take to finish my graduate degree online? There are at least 3 systems for online graduate degree programs:

The first is the virtual classroom system where you are organized into an online class with other graduate students. This kind of class has a strict beginning and end date, and due dates for the assignments in-between. In this kind of school, you can expect to take 1½ - 2 years to finish your Masters degree online, if you follow the degree straight through from beginning to end.
The second is the self-paced model . In this online graduate school system, you are assigned a mentor and you communicate with the mentor as you work toward your graduate degree. You work at your own pace to finish modules, packets, or other learning goals. There will still be a drop-dead-must-be-finished date for your modules and for finishing your program, but your progress in-between will be flexible. In this kind of course, you will usually take between 1 ½ - 5 years to complete a Master's degree. If you work especially hard, you might be able to finish sooner, but don't expect it to be easy.
The third online graduate education model is the competency-based model . I would be careful about colleges which offer degrees for life-experience, but there is at least one accredited university online which offers Master's programs based on competencies – Western Governor's University . In this type of university, you take tests or meet performance objectives to show that you are competent in a subject area. The way you learn those competencies is up to you. In this online program, you could take as little as one year to earn your Master's degree, if you already have a lot of knowledge and experience in your subject, but don't expect it to be easy. You will have to know your stuff to pass the tests.

What is it like to study with an online university? Every graduate school has its own way of arranging classes, and requires different levels of online participation. Some graduate programs require weekly online participation in class discussions and completion of group projects. Others only require you to communicate with your mentor. Some trust you that the papers and projects you turn in are your own original work, reasoning that finding someone to complete all of your assignments for you would be too hard. Others require you to take tests at testing centers who check your ID. Some online graduate programs require you to attend residencies of between two weeks to a month each year, where you share your projects with other students in the online grad school and participate in seminars.

If you are self-motivated and don't need to see your professor and fellow students face to face then an online graduate program might be right for you.
