You love to talk to people, and have a knack for understanding others and helping them with their problems, or maybe you are just fascinated with the beauty and complexity of the human mind. Sounds like you would love to study psychology. But many would-be psychology students simply cannot attend a traditional psychology program. For one reason or another, it simply isn't possible. If you are one of these would-be psychology students, you are in luck, because there are several online psychology schools that offer Bachelor's, Master's or PhDs in Psychology.
If you are looking to earn your psychology degree on line, here are some pointers to get you started. What can I do with my psychology degree?
- Teach: With a degree in psychology and a teaching certificate, you can teach in a middle school or high school. Psychology and Social Science positions face stiff competition in some districts. It will be much easier to find Psychology or Social Science teaching positions in inner-city or rural schools.
- Counselor: You may work for counseling network or run your own counseling business.
- Work for a Corporation: Corporations hire psychologists for advertising, human-resources or other leadership positions. Your psychology degree prepares you to work effectively with people in an organization. To sell yourself to an employer show how the skills you learned in psychology school will help the business.
- College or University (with a PhD): If you go on to earn a PhD in Psychology, you will be qualified to teach Psychology at a school of higher education. Don't expect the job hunt to be easy. There are a lot more Psychology and Social Science PhD graduates than there are positions in Psychology or Social Science schools.
What will my degree be worth? The value of your online psychology degree program depends on the school that you get it from. If the school that offers the psychology degree is a traditional institution with a solid reputation, your online degree will be worth the same as a psychology degree earned on campus. If you attend a school that only offers online degrees, it may be harder to convince prospective employers that your online program is as rigorous as a campus-based psychology program.
Will I learn as much online as I would in person? In many ways you probably will learn as much psychology online as on-campus. But if you are not proactive you may not. The many college and university students forget that when they graduate they will need to get a job using the psychology that they have been studying. So, make sure that as you are studying the psychological concepts you also make sure that you know them well enough to apply them.
Online psychology programs will give you fewer chances for role play and face-to-face counseling practice, so if your school doesn't supply these hands-on psychology experiences for you, you will need to supply them for yourself. Maybe you can volunteer at a crisis center or pay a psychologist to role-play with you. Think to yourself: “I'm going to need to use this psychology degree someday, how can I make sure that I know how to apply it?”
