Do you need to use student loans to pay for college? Yes or no, if you want to at least keep your loans to a minimum, you will want to get as much money from scholarships and financial aid as you can. Most people don't think of it as a scholarship, but if you or your parents don't have a large income, the Pell Grant can surely be a big part of your education program. My Pell Grants were generous enough that I didn't have to pay any tuition, and the grant also mostly covered my textbook expenses. That isn't as good as a full-ride scholarship, but it is a huge help.
Some points from The College Board to remember as you go out looking for financial and scholarships (with some of my embellishments):
- Look locally first. There is less competition for local scholarships.
- Start early developing talents, grades, and skills that will help you win scholarship competition. Practicing a less popular instrument like the French Horn or the Bassoon for an hour a day for several years will almost guarantee you a scholarship with some schools, (as long as you get good enough grades to meet the entrance requirements.)
- See if your company offers scholarships. Even some fast food companies offer scholarships to qualified employees.
- Ask organizations in your community if they offer scholarships.
- Find out if your parents' employers offer a scholarship to employees' children.
- Use a scholarship search engine like the one at The College Board. Don't use a scholarship search that you have to pay for – these are scams.
- Contact your local board of education about state scholarships.
- Ask the school that you hope to attend what kind of scholarships they offer.
Whatever you do, remember there are ways to pay for college. Just be proactive and put together a package of college scholarships and financial aid that gets you through. And as long as you have planned your education carefully, your hard work will pay off in a better salary.
