Does this sound familiar? You find a program that you want to pursue at a college or university that you want to attend. You get excited to enroll, but when you check to see what time the university offers classes, you see that you will have to quit your job and work a swing or a night shift to get the degree. Either that or live off of borrowed money to pay for your university degree. That was the situation I was in when I went looking for teacher certification programs. The solution was the University of Phoenix.
I have a wife and three kids to support and going to a traditional college at a traditional time just wasn't an option. When I looked into Phoenix University I found that University of Phoenix courses offered classes that met for 4 hours twice a week in the evenings. It was more expensive than a traditional university, but less expensive than quitting my job to go to school. So I signed up for a program at Phoenix.
Some of the important considerations about Phoenix college are:
- Phoenix has campuses in many locations all over the United States .
- Classes meet at the local Phoenix University campus from 6:00 to 10:00 pm once a week, and then you need to meet with your team members for 4 hours a week wherever you choose. (After a short time my group began meeting by phone and email for most of the assignments rather than commuting to the university campus.)
- The library and the text books are online. I usually only paid about $45 to download my Phoenix university text from the website. Of course there was also a $60 fee for each course to use the online resources.
- You can usually finish University of Phoenix degrees about six months earlier than you could at a traditional university because Phoenix college courses go steady through the summer and only take short holidays.
- Phoenix college requires its teachers to be practicing in their field. So they don't just teach theory. They tend to teach practical and useful skills.
- The tuition depends on your University of Phoenix course and the campus of the university that you attend. For courses that each campus offers and tuition information, you can contact the university at this website .
Phoenix college was both a good and a bad experience. On the more negative side, the Phoenix University program promised that we would learn what science had found to be effective principles in education. In fact, we rarely learned about educational research and its implications in any kind of scientific way, although we did learn from the experiences of our professors. Also, I still had to go into debt to pay for the expensive tuition.
The best part of studying with Phoenix was that I could keep my full-time job. And although at first I hated the University of Pheonix policy of working in groups, by the end of the program I appreciated that the University of Phoenix degrees require a lot of team learning. I learned to get along well with others, voice my disagreement reasonably, and compromise effectively.
